Understanding Verbs in English

What are Verbs?

Verbs are words that describe an action, state, or occurrence. They are one of the most important parts of a sentence because they tell us what the subject is doing or what is happening. Without verbs, we wouldn’t know if someone is running, speaking, or thinking!

Here are some examples of common verbs:

Run (action)
Speak (action)
Think (mental action)
Is/Am/Are (state of being)

Verbs are essential for creating clear and meaningful communication.

Action Verbs:
These describe physical or mental actions.

  • Example: She runs every morning.

Linking Verbs:
These connect the subject to more information about the subject.

Helping (Auxiliary) Verbs:
These help the main verb to form a tense or show the mood.

  • Example: She is studying for the exam.
  • Example: We have finished our project.

Modal Verbs:
These express necessity, possibility, or ability.
